GOALS

Phase 1 - Training

  • "Every scripture is inspired by God and useful for teaching, reproof, correction, and training in righteousness so that the person dedicated to God may be capable and equipped for every good work" (2Ti 3:16-17).

Phase 2 - Evangelism

  • "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature" (Mar 16:15).

PREPARATION

Application

  • This SERE 2027 Outreach has room for 5 to 25 people.

  • You are asked to do the following actions before applying.

    • Pray to ask God what His will is for you in this.

    • Read God's word for the Spirit's inspiration.

    • Seek counsel with godly people.

    • Pray to ask for confirmation if you move forward.

  • You are vetted in the following manner.

    • You must be Christian.

    • You must be an adult in age (18 years and older).

    • You must fill out the Application Form.

Confirmation

  • Once I receive your application, I pray over it, asking God to confirm it in me.

  • I'm looking for the following responses.

    • You're an adult, a Christian, and baptized in water baptism.

    • You've confirmed your belief in some fundamental Christians doctrines.

    • Your reasons to apply confirm your willingness, readiness, and faithfulness.

  • Here's a few thoughts for you to consider when you apply.

    • Answer the prompts directly.

    • Use stories to communicate real experience.

    • Provide enough details for me to grasp what you're saying.

    • Trust Jesus for the outcome, even if it's not the direction you hope.  

Materials

  • The Book, "Devoted to Evangelism," is located on Amazon.

  • If you are confirmed . . .

    • The book is free and will be sent to you.

    • Its arrival will be between 12/28/26 and 1/10/27.

    • If you don't receive it, please notify me before the outreach starts.

    • You are expected to read the material before each day of our training.

  • Therefore, if you are confirmed, you should do the following before 1/13/27.

    • Prepare a 1 to 2-minute introduction of yourself.

    • Read Chapter 1.

LOCATION AND TIME

  • The general location is somewhere in or very near to Santa Clara County, CA.

  • The exact location and address have not been determined at this time.

  • We will meet on Wednesday nights, starting 1/13/27 and ending 7/14/27.

  • We will from 7:00 to 9:30 PM every Wednesday night.

  • We'll schedule two nights off: 3/31/27 and 6/2/27.

  • 1/13/27 - Introductions and Chapter 1

    • Introduce ourselves and chat

    • Discuss motivation to evangelize

    • Discuss personal hindrances

  • 1/20/27 - Chapters 2 and 3

    • Learn how to define the gospel

    • Analyze evangelism experiences

    • Learn general principles of evangelism

    • Discuss how and why they apply

  • 1/27/27 - Chapter 4

    • Learn how to setup your outreach

    • Review four basic outreach questions

    • Look at some outreach examples

    • Create your outreach possibilities

  • 2/3/27 - Chapter 5 Part 1

    • Learn how to make progress in conversation

    • Review helpful communication techniques

    • Discuss self-monitoring and disclosure

    • Discuss active listening and spirit-led openings

  • 2/10/27 - Chapter 5 Part 2

    • Learn how to guide spiritual conversation

    • Review steps to progress in conversations

    • Look at an elongated conversation example

    • Discuss how and when to move forward

  • 2/17/27 - Chapter 6

    • Learn how to use your testimony

    • Look at the two types of testimony

    • Review examples of Jesus's testimonies

    • Start thinking about your own testimony

  • 2/24/27 - Chapter 7

    • Learn how to use a tool for evangelism

    • Look at four different evangelism tools

    • Discuss how to use the tool emphasized

    • Review some step-by-step instructions

  • 3/3/27 - Chapters 8 and 9

    • Learn how to handle objections of others

    • Discuss helpful perspectives on objections

    • Review how to bring it all together

  • 3/10/27 - Complete Review

    • Review the major parts of the training one more time

    • Discuss as many remaining questions and issues as possible

    • Go through the details of the next phase of the outreach

  • Weekly - Snacks, Expectations, Prayers

    • Snacks will be available during training but not for the next phase.

    • We will have breaks throughout the night during training.

    • We share prayer requests and pray together at the end each night.

Phase 2 - Evangelism - 3/17/27 - 7/14/27

  • Fast - By 2:30 PM, each person should stop eating for the day.

    • This is not mandatory, but it's encouraged.

    • The time also it not mandatory but suggestive.

    • The idea is to strive together in prayer.

  • Discuss - At 7:00 PM, we start with discussion about the outreach.

    • As things get practical, questions and thoughts will come up.

    • We use the first hour of our time discussing these issues.

    • Some of the topics that may come up are . . .

      • Personal hindrances with training or evangelism

      • Clarifications about outreach setup

      • Conversational points with people

      • Transitioning into spiritual conversation

      • Tips or thoughts on how to share the gospel

      • Handling real objections or sticky situations

  • Pray - At 8:00 PM, we pray for 60 to 90 mins with two short breaks.

    • This is the time where we'll seek to strive together in prayer.

    • We'll encourage each other to prayer fervently for the outreach.

    • We'll take new prayer requests and follow-up on old ones.

  • Break - 3/31/27, 6/2/27

    • On these two nights, the group will take a break from meeting together.

ABOUT ME

As you read this, understand that I've done nothing apart from Jesus (Joh 15:5). Everything here was His doing in my life.

My name is Scott Koppel, and I've been a Christian since 1997. I'm married to my perfect wife, Kristen. We've been married since 2007. We have two kids, Addison and Jeremy. We've been attending Grace Bible Chapel in San Jose, CA, since 2017. I've been an English and Communication's instructor at various colleges in the Bay Area since 2007.

On July 28, 1997, at 2:42 AM in Hillsboro, TN, Jesus saved my life. I recall responding to Jesus for the first time in Seattle, WA, in the early 1990s at an Amway Convention. The worship team came out, and I felt moved to go down. I went from the top row of the Seattle Superdome all the way to the floor and felt the tug of Jesus for the first time. Over the next several years, Jesus pursued me. Around 1995 or 1996, I found myself in an evangelism class at Hillview Bible Chapel in Cupertino, CA, where I grew up. I think I was the only one in the class that was not saved. One of the elders at the church took me for a walk, and I remember thinking that this was the first time I felt someone care about my soul. Then, more things happened. But, in July 1997, I flew out to Hillsboro, TN, to see my sister and her family at their bed and breakfast called, Lord's Landing. My sister and her husband had been praying for me. On July 28, they were witnessing to me, and I got saved that night at 2:42 AM. I don't recall everything they told me, but I remember what I prayed. I leaned over in my bed and prayed, "Jesus, I don't know who you are, but I know I want what you have." By God's grace, I've been walking with Jesus ever since.

In 2001, I started up the campus outreach portion of a college ministry when, at a bible study, I heard the call to do campus work. In 2003, I attended a debate at De Anza College between a pastor and a doctor. The doctor said that Jesus never died on the cross but was preserved in his death wraps. That debate started up a 12-year study about the whole story of Jesus. My purpose in that study was to learn to defend my faith using scripture. In 2017, I felt led to study the gospel specifically. I spent the next 3 years, studying the gospels again and looking at how Jesus witnessed to people. Over the course of this time, I developed a method of sharing the gospel with others by consolidating the training I received at church and the communication skills I acquired at my job. Since 2017, I've been quietly practicing this method of evangelism and have seen some people come to know Jesus. Now, starting in 2027, I'm hoping to bring this method to you through the SERE Outreach.
